Trust Your Gut

When we left the nicu one of the nurses was the first to tell me that as a mommy you have to trust your gut. If you feel like something isn't right with your baby, you are probably right. No one knows them like their mommy and I was told to trust my gut feelings about things.

My gut was telling me that there was something wrong with Lucy. She acted like she was in pain so often. I requested the referral to the GI dr.

Well, I've been struggling with what yhe GI dr said. She basically told me my gut was wrong. She said that the "pain" Lucy was in was her acting that way. It was a behavior and not a symptom of something being wrong.

Since then I've seriously been questioning my choices and decisions more and more. I've been wondering about my mommy instincts and questioning myself. I've lost confidence in myself as a mother and it hurts.

So, my question is, where do you draw the line between trusting your gut and being an overly concerned first time mommy?

  1. Ugh, that is such a tough question. The line is different for every situation and every parent. Try not to lose confidence in yourself, no matter what you choose is the right answer!

  2. Always trust your gut. Its right. The doctors dont know your baby inside and out-- they dont see them 24/7 and only have a limited idea of what their issues are. I listened to doctors and didn't trust my gut for 7 months with my daughter and I'd finally had enough and made the changes that needed to be made and lo and behold, my gut was correct and the doctors were wrong (she was allergic to milk and they kept telling me it was reflux). Go with your gut and get a 2nd opinion.

  3. I agree with Jess. Your mommy instinct is always right. Seek a second or even third opinion. Have they done a belly u/s on her? If not, I would ask/demand one. Samantha cried for months. And it was an "in pain" cry...I knew it wasnt just colic but digestive issues too. She had lots of tests done that didnt show anything major but we did have to experiment with different formulas to help her and she has been on soy milk up until just about a month ago. Keep strong momma! xo

  4. I THIRD Jess and Sarah! I dealt with a milk allergy/lactose intolerant baby 18yrs ago and it was brutal getting them to listen. I'm much more b*tchy now when it comes to my baby! Trust your gut no matter what! Get a 2nd opinion. And if need be a 3rd. At the end of the day if you feel you have done all you can, then you are doing the right thing! HUGS!

  6. Hi there,
Forgive me, but I've only just realised you've been following my blog for a while and I'd like to return the favour.
I totally go with my mummy/gut instinct when it comes to our baby. Noone knows your baby better than you do! And don't hesitate to keep following that instinct even when doctors think you're acting like a crazy person. You only want what's best for your little ones, and sometimes that means being persistent and pain in people's behinds!

  7. Oh no. Don't lose confidence in yourself because I KNOW you are a wonderful mommy! I ion through your writing, but even more than that, because you worry about it. If you weren't doing a good job, you wouldn't think twice about what the doctor said. I agree with the others, get a second opinion. If that's not it, maybe it's something else. I'm pretty sure you are the one person that can decipher your baby's cry more than anyone else.
